Digital news to watch: Google Ads adds account-level PMax reporting

In this week’s digital news, Google has introduced account-level Channel Reporting for Performance Max (PMax), allowing advertisers to view and compare all campaigns in one place. From October, Google will unify Local Services Ads badges into one Google Verified badge.

Google has carried out a significant “clarity cleanup” of its Knowledge Graph, deleting over three billion entities. Google’s John Mueller and Martin Splitt explained that while lazy loading improves site performance, using it on above-the-fold content can harm a site’s LCP score.

Elon Musk has set his sights on Microsoft with a new company called “Macrohard,” a software venture tied to his AI startup, xAI. The art of gatekeeping is officially back; and it’s because our algorithms have failed us. AI recommendation engines and algorithms full of AI slop funnel you into an echo chamber.

Google Ads expands PMax channel reporting to account level

Google has introduced account-level Channel Reporting for Performance Max (PMax), allowing advertisers to view and compare all campaigns in one place. This enables segmentation by conversion metrics, easier identification of performance patterns, and streamlined optimisation without switching between campaigns. Previously, channel performance data was isolated within individual PMax campaigns, creating friction in analysis. The update offers more visibility and efficiency, helping advertisers spot cross-campaign trends quickly. Google notes the feature applies to PMax “at this time,” hinting at possible expansion to other campaign types. In short: faster insights, simpler reporting, and better opportunities for optimisation.

Google Verified makes it easier to find trusted local businesses

From October, Google will unify Local Services Ads badges into one Google Verified badge. It will appear on eligible profiles after screening, show completed verification checks, and display dynamically when useful. This replaces Google Guaranteed, Screened, Licence Verified, and Money Back Guarantee badges.

The ‘great clarity cleanup’ and the future of AI

Google has carried out a significant “clarity cleanup” of its Knowledge Graph, deleting over three billion entities. This is the largest contraction in a decade and signals a shift from prioritising data volume to clarity, confidence, and trustworthiness. The move aims to create a leaner, higher-quality dataset to underpin the next generation of AI-powered search features like AI Overviews.
The cleanup has implications for SEO, with Google favouring content that is accurate, well-structured, and authoritative. The focus is now on ensuring a clear, single-typed identity in the Knowledge Graph. This means content creators should prioritise fact-checking and transparent sourcing to be rewarded in the AI-driven search landscape.

Lazy loading can delay largest contentful paint (LCP)

In a recent episode of Google’s Search Off The Record Podcast, Google’s John Mueller and Martin Splitt discussed that whilst lazy loading lazy loading is a great tool for site performance, applying it to “above-the-fold” content can negatively impact a website’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score.
LCP is a critical Core Web Vital metric. The browser’s preload scanner normally prioritises the loading of the largest element on a page, but a lazy-loading attribute tells the browser to treat that element as a lower priority, delaying its rendering. The recommendation is to never lazy load your main hero image or other most important content, and to use preloading instead

Elon Musk takes aim at Bill Gates’ Microsoft with new AI venture “Macrohard”

Elon Musk’s new software venture, Macrohard, is a purely AI software company designed to generate hundreds of specialised coding and generative AI agents that could one day simulate products from companies like Microsoft entirely through artificial intelligence. The company appears to be closely linked to xAI’s Colossus 2 supercomputer project in Memphis. Musk has confirmed plans to acquire millions of Nvidia GPUs. Colossus is already one of the most powerful supercomputer clusters in the world, and it is still being expanded.

Moving beyond the hamster wheel of content creation

Content curation is growing in relevance, driven by user fatigue with algorithmic posts and AI-generated noise. Curation can offer a competitive edge by emphasising taste, judgment, and cultural listening. Unlike content creation, curation builds trust by surfacing what matters, shaping narratives, and reinforcing thought leadership. For marketers, integrating curation alongside original content can deepen brand authority, expand networks, and improve campaign performance.
