Google reenables request indexing tool on Search Console

Google have reinstated their request indexing tool, within the URL inspection feature in Google Search Console.

To the despair of many SEO specialists, this tool was disabled back in October and was expected to return before the festive season – however, this wasn’t the case until now. Google Search Central made the announcement via Twitter, stating that the tool is now ready to use ‘just in time’ for the new year.

What is the request indexing tool?

The request indexing tool allows you to give your new or updated article a push so that Google can find it and index it much quicker.

When you create a new post on your site, you may think that you’ve included all the relevant keywords you need to cover and have optimised the title and headings accordingly around your chosen terms, but, ultimately, it won’t make a difference to your site and overall rankings if Google doesn’t find it. And it’s impossible to know exactly how long this will take if you just wait for Google to find it.

Advice from Google Search Central

We are reminded, however, that this is not a way to push many URLs at once. As subsequent tweets, Google said if you have “large numbers of URLs, you should submit a sitemap instead of requesting indexing” via Google Search Console.”

Additionally, just because you push your URL using the request indexing tool – there is no guarantee that your new URL will be indexed and ranked. Nevertheless, it’s a very good way of telling Google there is new, high-quality content on your site so they know it’s being updated.
