Meta to show rival ads providers on Marketplace after EU antitrust fine

Meta will allow rival classified ad providers to list on Facebook Marketplace, following a €797m EU antitrust fine for unfair competition. The European Commission ruled Meta had imposed unfair conditions and tied Marketplace to Facebook. In response, Meta launched the Facebook Marketplace Partner Program, though it is challenging the fine. CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticised the EU’s actions as unfair to US firms. The scheme was tested with eBay in Germany, France, and the US. The Commission is assessing Meta’s compliance with the ruling.

Google’s new PMax Usefulness Indicator helps advertisers measure the incremental traffic impact of search themes, improving targeting. Google Ads rolled out a new Performance Max Usefulness Indicator. Designed to help advertisers assess the incremental traffic impact of their search themes. The update, which we were told was coming in January, gives advertisers more visibility into how search themes contribute to campaign performance, allowing for better-informed targeting decisions.

Google connects Gmail to Google+ allowing strangers to contact you

New feature integrates users’ contacts on social network Google+, allowing users who don’t know your email address to contact you over Gmail. Gmail users can now send and receive emails from their Google+ contacts without knowing their email address. “Gmail will suggest your Google+ connections as recipients when you are composing a new email,” explained Google Product Manager David Nachum in a blog post. The new feature will be turned on automatically and aims to help people who already know each other. But do not have each other’s email address. When users type in an email recipient, Gmail will also suggest Google+ contacts as recipients.

Why BuzzFeed Is Creating Its Own Social Media Platform

BuzzFeed has announced that it will be creating a new social media platform built specifically to “spread joy” and “enable playful creative expression”, according to Jonah Peretti, founder and CEO of BuzzFeed. “This social media platform will use AI to give users agency instead of stealing their agency. I’m fed up with giving the platform companies advice about how to fix the internet. If we want this done right, we have to do it ourselves,” he wrote in a blog post.  In his post, Peretti talked about how the world is worried about a future where “AI takes away our human agency, devalues our labor, and creates social discord.”
