PR for Gen Z: Understanding Audience Differences

Public relations (PR) has always been about connecting with audiences in meaningful ways. However, with the rise of Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, brands must rethink their strategies to resonate with this unique and influential demographic.

Unlike millennials, who were captivated by the rise of influencer culture, Gen Z places a higher premium on authenticity. They value transparency, honesty, and realness in brand messaging. They’re quick to call out performative activism or superficial campaigns that don’t align with their values. 

Socially Conscious and Values-Driven 

Gen Z is deeply aware of societal issues such as climate change, racial justice, and mental health. They’re more likely to support brands that align with their values and take meaningful action on these issues. 

Shorter Attention Spans 

With an average attention span of just 8 seconds, Gen Z prefers content that is concise, visually engaging, and to the point. They’re more likely to scroll past or ignore traditional long-form content in favour of quick, digestible formats like TikTok, Reels, and memes. 

Community-Oriented 

Gen Z thrives on community. Whether it’s niche online forums, group chats, or fandoms, they value spaces where they can connect with like-minded individuals. Brands that tap into this sense of community can build lasting relationships with their audience. 

Key Strategies for Targeting Gen Z 

Given these differences, PR campaigns must be tailored to meet the expectations and behaviours of Gen Z. Here are some strategies to consider: 

Embrace Social Media as a Primary Channel 

Social media is where Gen Z lives, breathes, and engages. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are essential for reaching this audience. However, each platform requires a tailored approach:

Focus on authenticity, creativity, and humour. Gen Z appreciates brands that embrace trends and create relatable, entertaining content. 

Instagram

While aesthetics still matter, Gen Z prefers interactive features like Stories, polls, and Q&A sessions that encourage participation. 

YouTube

Long-form video content still has a place if it’s informative, entertaining, or educational. Consider partnering with YouTubers who resonate with Gen Z values. 

Prioritise Authentic Influencer Partnerships 

Gen Z is sceptical of overly polished endorsements. Instead of partnering with mega-influencers, brands should consider collaborating with micro- or nano-influencers who have a smaller but more engaged following.  

These influencers often have a stronger connection with their audience and are perceived as more genuine. 

Communicate Your Values—and Back Them Up 

Gen Z pays attention to whether brands practice what they preach. If your PR campaign highlights sustainability, ensure your business operations reflect that commitment.  

Transparency is key; openly share your efforts, challenges, and progress. 

Leverage User-Generated Content (UGC) 

UGC is highly effective for Gen Z audiences. Encouraging users to share their experiences with your brand fosters authenticity and community engagement. Contests, challenges, and branded hashtags can help amplify UGC efforts. 

Tell Stories That Resonate 

Storytelling remains a powerful tool in PR, but it must be tailored. Focus on stories that reflect diversity, inclusivity, and shared values. Use relatable characters and narratives that highlight real-world impact. 

Make it Interactive 

Gen Z craves interaction and participation. Gamification, quizzes, and interactive content can help keep them engaged. For example, brands can create Instagram filters, TikTok challenges, or interactive infographics to drive engagement. 

Monitor Trends and Adapt Quickly 

Trends evolve rapidly. Successful PR campaigns require agility and a willingness to experiment. Monitoring platforms like TikTok’s “For You” page, Twitter trending topics, and meme culture can provide valuable insights into what’s resonating with this audience.

It’s important to steer clear of these common mistakes: 

Overly Polished Content

This generation prefers raw, unfiltered content over heavily produced advertisements. 

Ignoring Diversity

This audience expects representation in your campaigns. Failing to reflect diverse voices can lead to backlash. 

Performative Activism

Generation Z can easily spot when brands are jumping on social causes without genuine intent. Ensure your activism is backed by action.

Personalisation is key to making them feel seen and understood. 

Targeting Generation Z requires a fresh approach that prioritises authenticity, values-driven messaging, and adaptability. By embracing social media, fostering community, and staying true to your brand’s commitments, you can build meaningful connections with this influential generation.
