CRO Services FAQs

User Acceptance Testing (UAT) is the final stage of a software or website development process where real users, rather than developers or QA testers, validate that a product works as intended in real-world conditions before it goes live.

The core idea is simple: the people who will actually use the product are best placed to confirm it does what it’s supposed to do. UAT typically involves a defined group of end users working through a set of scenarios or tasks, checking that the system behaves correctly and meets the agreed requirements.

Far fewer than most people assume. Research consistently shows that five to eight users is enough to surface the majority of significant usability issues in a single round of testing. Beyond that, you tend to see the same problems recurring rather than new ones emerging. For quantitative studies where you need statistical confidence in the findings, larger sample sizes are required, but for qualitative usability testing, small and focused is almost always the right approach. We’ll scope the right sample size for your specific objectives at the start of every engagement.

The honest answer is: earlier than most teams think. User testing is most commonly seen as a pre-launch validation step, but the most value comes from testing throughout the design process, from early wireframes and prototypes right through to live environments. Testing a prototype costs a fraction of fixing a problem in a built product. We’d always recommend at least one round of testing before development begins, one before launch, and ongoing testing post-launch as part of a continuous optimisation programme.

In moderated testing, a facilitator guides participants through tasks in real time, asking questions, probing responses, and exploring unexpected behaviour as it happens. It produces rich, nuanced insight but requires more time and resource to run. Unmoderated testing lets users work through tasks independently, without a facilitator present, making it faster and easier to run at scale. Both methods have their place, and the right choice depends on what you’re trying to learn. We’ll recommend the most appropriate approach based on your research objectives.
